VICTORIA FANTIN-LATOUR née Dubourg Paris 1840 – 1926 Bure, Orne Victoria Dubourg is perhaps most often remembered as the beautiful wife of Henri Fantin-Latour, whom she first met in 1866, and married in 1876. It was she who encouraged and supported him during the latter part of his career, understanding and sharing his artistic aims and ideals. She was however, a professional artist in her own right, and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1869 onwards, where she won an honourable mention in 1894, and a medal in 1895. Victoria was a particularly accomplished painter of still lifes, many of which were inspired by Henri’s compositions. Her paintings also reflect the influence of Chardin, seen in their traditional format and tonal sobriety. Many of her still lifes, like those of her husband, were painted in the tranquillity of Victoria’s country house at Bure, Lower Normandy, where they stayed during the summer months.
